After making the decision that a feline pet is for you, do you choose a kitten, a young cat or a fully grown cat  -  perhaps from a rescue home?
Adult Cats
A fully grown cat can actually be an ideal pet to bring home.  They are already well mannered. Most will have had all of their vaccinations and have been neutered or spayed which is ideal if your budget is low and you want a loving pet without having to spend lots on vet bills. Rescue homes or previous owners have usually seen to all of this already  - their priority is to find a loving home for their cats. An adult will need less time and attention so may be a better option if you are away at work all day, or are elderly or infirm. However, if you are giving a home to an abused cat, more attention would be required. An abused and neglected feline may have bad habits which will take time and perserverance to change.

Kittens
A cute kitten is hard to resist and many people would rather have a pet that they have brought up and trained themselves. A kitten will require a lot more attention and care then an adult cat will require.  Both will need supplies such as food, water, a place to sleep and a litter box. But kittens will require a more secure location since they are so small and almost always are inquisitive.  You’ll be looking for him constantly if you don’t take the time to kitty proof your home!

Both the kitten and the cat will need  medical attention. A grown cat, however, may only need to visit a vet for updating shots and an overall health screening, whereas a kitten will need all the innoculations as well as the additional costs to have them spayed or neutered.

Decide exactly what you would like from your pet. A cat will already be set in his personality and quirks whereas you can help to mold a kitten.  It’s a big decision but one that’s fun to make.
