What is in a cat’s name? Have you just acquired a new cat and want to find the perfect name for him?  If so, don’t rush things.  Let the right name come to you.  Just like naming a new baby, picking a name for your cat will require a bit of careful consideration.  After all, your cat will have to live with and answer to his name for many years to come. Also, try to avoid names that would be embarrassing to be called out! Invest a bit of time in choosing the very name that is right for your pet. Involve all the family  - children can be very innovative with name choices.

So, what is the right name for your new cat? Here are a few suggestions to help you get the grey cells working.

* Pick a name that describes the way the cat looks.  Many people do this.  Such as in fluffy and whiskers.
* Pick a name that describes the characteristics that you like about the cat.  For example, pick a name like sugar if your cat is sweet.  What is your cat like?  What names jump to mind?  This one may take a little more time to come up with but with a bit of time spent watching and observing to learn the movements and the interests of your cat, you’ll find the perfect name for it.
* Name your cat after someone special. This can be very confusing though if that person is around regularly. It works better if the name is from a favourite deceased aunt or uncle, or book or film character, or actor or pop star.

Finding the right name for your cat can be fun.  Let everyone join in the naming game!  Pick something unique.  Pick something that’s fun.  Just remember to use that name over and over again so that your pet can learn that it is his.  Many cats can do this.  Some though will be obstinate and choose not to listen!
